Digital Marketing Common Misconceptions
Written by Aaron Delezenski on April 21st 2020
I have some things to debunk.
But let's start with some of the stats and facts about digital marketing.
I'm going to focus on Facebook advertising because it is by far one of the best marketing platforms to use right now.
Why?
Well, for one I've had massive success with it. But the other more important thing is, numbers and data don't lie.
1. “I’ve tried Facebook ads and they didn’t work. My customers don’t come from Facebook”
Trust me when I say this, your customers ARE on Facebook.
According to Similarweb.com Facebook is ranked as the #3 website in the world. That ranking is based on monthly website traffic.
Here are some other stats about Facebook:
- 2.5 Billion (yes with a B) active users every month.
- 1.6 Billion active users log on every day.
- 25 Billion website visits every month.
- The average time spent per Facebook visit is 20 minutes.

With those numbers, yes, your audience IS on Facebook. It’s just you must know how to find them to get the results you want.
With the amount of data that Facebook has on its users they probably know more about you than…well… you. That’s a whole other topic though.
Facebook is very smart, but you still need to give it guidelines on who to show the ads to. That comes down to doing the proper research on the target audience, knowing how to set the ads up correctly, and then testing.
Let's first look at some of the questions and concerns I've heard from people.
Now, there's nothing wrong with any of these. It's more of the fact of not knowing or not having the proper training in how to use the tools.
Next misconception...
2. “Aren't Facebook ads expensive?”
Answer: No, but they can be.
Huh?
Yes, they can be. This is if you don't know what you're doing or haven't had proper training, then yes, they can be expensive.
Just like with most things, to be good, it takes training, practice, and trial and error.
Sure, you can go down the ‘Boost’ post route. However, that will get you subpar results at best. I look at the 'Boost' post feature as the intro to Facebook advertising. You have less control over your ads and therefore your results will reflect.
Now for the No answer.
With Facebook ads, you can start with as little as $5 per day. Yes, just 5 bucks. You can actually start with however much you want to spend per day.
Is it wise to start low? Actually, yes, it is.
This leads me to another point. With digital marketing, the beauty is you can change your ads on the fly.
If the ads are not producing, all that needs to be done is to stop the ads. Digital marketing allows you to start and stop ads at any time you want. That also means you can spend however much you want on any given day.
Say you are getting poor results. Stop the ads that are not producing. That just lowered the amount you'll spend that day.
Say the results are great but you want more customers or revenue coming in. All that needs to be done is to raise the daily budget or launch new ads.
That means there is not a set monthly budget for digital marketing. The budget comes down to what you want to pay. Meaning no amount is contracted in for the platform to spend each month.
Try that with 'old school' marketing. Want to change a billboard if it's not working? That will take days or weeks if you even can, plus depending on the contract you're in you may not be able to. You pay that monthly contract and you’re locked in.
3. The Gold Mine of Data Available For The Ads
With digital marketing, you don’t have to start with a large budget. It can be better to start small.
The reason to start small is that you want to test and tweak your ads. After you run your ads, you’ll gather data. From there you will tweak your ads to get better results.
You can’t quite do that with traditional marketing. One of the big reasons is there isn’t data available to know how your ads are performing.
Sure, you can have a coupon code on a billboard or in a radio ad, and that will tell you how many people came from that ad.
However, with digital marketing you have access to data that will tell you:
- How many people saw your ad.
- How many people clicked on your ad.
- How much it's costing you for every time someone clicks on your ad
- The percentage of people who watched:
- 10 seconds of your video
- 25% of your video
- 50% of your video
- 95% of your video
- The amount of time people spend on specific webpages of your site.
- How many people completed specific actions on your site.
- Plus, more…
That’s only a small portion of the data that you get from digital marketing.
Since you can get all that data, you can know exactly where your ads are lacking in performance and then make the necessary changes.
Final Words
If Facebook ads have not worked in the past, that doesn’t mean Facebook advertising doesn’t work for you.
With over 1.6 Billion active users, the customers for your business are there. You just need to know how to find them.
Using Facebook advertising to get successful results comes down to knowing how to create and properly set up the ad campaigns.
Knowing what data to look at and how to interpret it is a major factor. The data tells you how to tweak the ads for better results. If the ads aren’t performing with the outcomes you want, all you have to do is stop the ads, make some changes then run them again. Rinse and repeat until you get the desired results.
